Another One

At a certain stage, the Princess started reading and saying things backwards. Now Daniel has started. Could it be because they’re left handed? Or do all children do that?

Do you mean reading from left to right? Within words i.e. reading “dog” as “god” or letters i.e. reading “d” as “b” or just the sentences i.e. reading “the boy ran” as “ran boy the”?

When things are mirror images (i.e. which is left and which is right) this is hard for young children and actually in a lot of adults (try giving Mr Spouse directions and you’ll see what I mean… NO THE OTHER RIGHT). Nothing to do with being left handed.

The first of the options outlined. But I don’t ever remember being able to do this myself. Perhaps I just devoted my energies to trying to work out which was right and which was left – unsuccessfully, it transpires.

I did spend a lot of time and energy writing things backwards and talking backwards (I can still sing ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ with all the words in the right order but backwards). But then I’m also left handed (and it was when I was a bit older I think). I probably just did it to annoy.

Left handers and backwards – weird. Also, yes, mildly annoying.
