Upbeat

Michael wanted to read “1984”. Could I find it on our bookshelves? I could not. Not to worry, I took myself off to the library online to reserve a copy. The only one to hand in Dublin was a large print edition. I ordered it. It arrived. Do you think the people who designed the cover had ever read the book? I’m not sure whether it’s the comic sans font or the hot pink cover but probably not, I would say.

That is so magnificently wrong that it could have actually been a scene in the book! When I read 1984 as a set book in school in the 1970s I was a science fiction nut and so I concentrated more on his view of the future than I did on the ideas. I did not think much of his version of future technology but even now I still think parts are quite chilling.

Lurid pink…friendly hint do not order a bible from the same publisher

I don’t know, bible could be an exciting option. I suspect Micheal read 1984 in the same spirit as you did – he seemed to enjoy it all the same.
