Soap Opera

24 March, 2024

I put soap on my birthday list. It turned out to be pretty expensive soap. £18. Be still my beating heart. Herself bought it for me. But it turned out that she had left it too late so she paid £42 for overnight shipping. I said to my friend, “WHO would pay £60 for a bar of soap?” “You,” she replied. A depressingly accurate insight, for who bankrolls this excess? Me. Was it reassuring to hear that she didn’t eat the week she ordered it? Not entirely.

Anyway they failed to deliver overnight due to “trouble in the Netherlands”. Herself said they made it sound like civil war had broken out. Happily, however, they not only refunded her the extortionate overnight shipping fee but also the cost of the soap itself. Eventually she was told that it had made landfall at the nearest UPS depot. I picked it up. Some immediate difficulties presented themselves. It was addressed not to me but Mr. Waffle. I had to video call him and they released it to me once he’d appeared onscreen holding a copy of his passport.

Part of the suspicion was undoubtedly caused by me saying, “It’ll be a small box, it’s soap.” Ladies and gentlemen, it was not a small box.

Opening it when I got home was like the dance of the seven veils.

What’s it like, you may wonder. Well, you may wonder as it remains unopened upstairs. I intend to save it for a very special occasion. What this might be is unclear, I’ll keep you posted.

Thursday 21 March

My friend is a friend of the Druid theatre company. She got free (for a certain value of free) tickets to “A Shadow of a Gunman” and brought me along on Thursday. I am not Sean O’Casey’s biggest fan but I quite enjoyed it. There was an interview with the director and some of the actors afterwards. The director pointed out that we are very lucky to have a trio of plays set and written about the time of the founding of the State.

Apparently when “Shadow of a Gunman” (which saved the Abbey’s bacon financially) was first performed the fighting was still going on and the audience had to be warned that any gunshots they heard were part of the performance.

It’s set in a tenement that’s raided by the Black and Tans and I was reminded of Mr. Waffle’s grandmother’s story. Apparently she came home from school and the Black and Tans were barring access to her building. “I have to get in,” she said, “they’re raiding my flat.” “Aha,” said the soldier on the door, “how do you know it’s your flat that’s being raided?” “It’s always our flat,” she said wearily.

Friday 22 March

My sister came to Dublin bearing an enormous quantity of china which I have managed, with some difficulty, to house. She also brought an old kettle which I remember from when I was a child in our old house. Even I can’t explain why I want this.

I also found another recruit for my typewriter breeding programme. Michael has been enjoying playing with both but I have no idea why I have kept them.

My sister and I journeyed on the Luas and this very nice young woman offered me her seat. The absolute worst thing about this is that my sister was with me and I fear I will be tortured for eternity or at least until she is old enough to have people offer her a seat. This is the first time this has happened to me and I wouldn’t call myself entirely delighted.

Sunday, 24 March

Mr. Waffle and I went for a long cycle. We saw a quite worthwhile Orpen exhibition in the Phoenix Park which I would recommend. I didn’t know a lot about Orpen the man before going but he seems to have had quite the love life.

This girl is definitely his daughter:

Speculation is that this one might be also:

I came home exhausted and ended up playing a board game which, naturally, I lost. Very tiring. Michael was notified that he is to play the role of “Public Gar” in an exciting student production of “Philadelphia, Here I Come”. Stay tuned for updates.

My father would have been 99 today. Maybe it’s not a total surprise that people are offering me a seat on public transport.

Random Jottings

29 March, 2024
Posted in: Dublin, Ireland, Mr. Waffle, Reading etc.

It was Mr. Waffle’s birthday a week after mine but he remains a year younger than me. I often wonder what I did with that extra year given that he seems to know so much more than me, particularly about flags. We did our best with presents but I fear that, as usual, we failed to give him anything that was any good. He’s a hard man to buy for. Still, he seemed pleased with his presents and his birthday dinner and I suppose that is the best we can hope for.

A couple of weeks ago Mr. Waffle and I went to a terrible film called “Le Voyage de Talia”. It had some interesting ideas and the potential to be interesting but it failed to realise its potential. I felt you should know.

Today we went out for a cycle around Killiney which is a lot more attractive than I remember and an awful lot hillier than you might expect somewhere near the coast to be. We took the suburban train out with our bikes. There was an older Ukrainian woman on the train going to Bray which is a bit further along the line and, for the first time ever, my Ukrainian came in useful. She didn’t speak much English and she wanted to know how many stops to Bray and how to get to the seafront there. With some factual input from another woman, I was able to translate, a proud moment, I can tell you. I pointed in the direction of Bray on the horizon to explain how much further she needed to go. She looked at the bay delighted and said that Bray reminded her of Yalta on the Black Sea; probably the first time that comparison has been made.

Anyway Mr. Waffle and I got out in Killiney, cycled about and had lunch and a good time was had by all etc. And it almost didn’t rain on us.
