Why?

9 April, 2025
Posted in: Dublin, Ireland

I have a basket on the front of my bike. Something about the wicker is extraordinarily tempting to the litter louts of Dublin. Nothing is ever left in my back basket (wire) but I will often return to an empty coffee cup or drink can in the front basket even when (especially annoying this) there is a rubbish bin right beside the bike. Does anyone else have this (slightly niche) problem?

When I lived in London, I used to find the rubbish placed neatly on the back rack. I’ve a feeling this is why everyone cycles with a backpack in London instead of panniers (or, indeed, a basket)

I used to get this too and it drove me mad. A bike is not a bin, people!

I wonder if you could get some kind of lid or mesh to cover it. A gap in the market!

As I use my bike exclusively for the purpose God intended, meandering round the village looking for stray parcels belonging to my wife, this does not happen to me. In an exciting bike update it had a trip in the car this week as I took it in the car to the garage so that I could cycle home. It beats walking…I am up at this time because of health updates from an elderly relative. Could be worse, they are at least updates….

Who would have thought that there would be so much empathy for my bike as bin problems? I gather this may be a city problem…
