Feeling Elderly

I took the Princess to see the doctor the other day. The doctor was a lovely woman maybe ten years younger than me. “Hello” she said to us holding out her hand “I’m Deirdre.” Not Dr X? Not even a surname, for God’s sake? I am an island of formality adrift in an informal world.

I will be 41 next month, I think you can tell.

I love that, actually. My major pet peeve is “Hello, Beth, I’m Dr. Jones.” I figure either I am Mrs. Bupkiss and you are Dr. Jones, or if I am Beth then at the very least you should be Dr. Amanda Jones.

Well, not you personally, obviously. Your name isn’t Amanda.

I quite like the I am Dr. Jones and you are Mrs. Smith model. I do agree though that I am Dr. Jones and you are Amanda is quite wrong. Especially since, as you point out, neither of us is called Amanda.

What would you think of ‘Dr Deirdre’? I wonder if your friend Pixie introduces herself to her patients as such.

Re Dr Pixie: That’s what the narrator on Embarrassing Bodies calls her.

I have spent all afternoon being called Mrs MyName by my dentist. He is a student and is referred to by his first name, his senior clinician is Dr HerName. I find it both polite and professional.

    I feel I should add I am not 41.
