Glendalough

5 January, 2015
Posted in: Ireland, Mr. Waffle

Mr. Waffle and I eased ourselves into January by going for a walk in Glendalough today. It was pretty rainy but pleasant all the same.

I have seen it look like this in sunshine; to be honest, that is better. I felt for the American tourists who were unlikely to be back.

The visitors to the toilets have strong views about grammar. Glendalough: attracting pedants from all nations.

Imagine if we corrected in this way every mistake non-native English speakers make. In Brussels it would be a never-ending task. I find this kind of thing extremely ungracious and discouraging – make corrections only if you are asked to do so or if there is a risk of embarassment or lack of clarity.

Nothing like a rant to start the new year! Or should that be ‘New Year’?

I don’t know, I found it mildly amusing. I am also unclear whether the Italian copy is perfect or the Italians just don’t care. Your own views?

Don’t know about the Italian but I suggest that for the French they just write the whole thing in capitals next time as technically accents would not then be required. And shouldn’t there be an upside-down exclamation mark at the start of the Spanish one?

Have I just been hoist(ed?) by my own pEtard there?
