Out of Control Inverted Commas

13 March, 2018
Posted in: Ireland, Work

My colleague whose father died last month has, naturally, been inundated by mass cards. He tells me he received one from some friends saying, “Sorry about the death of your ‘father'”. “I have to ask them what they were implying,” he said. This inverted comma for emphasis business must end.

It’s sad that this was upon the death of his father, but I laughed at what they were implying part.

I have a constant struggle in the office to prevent letters going out under my name with the words Subject to Contract between inverted commas.
Also not to have document layout done with spaces and soft carriage returns but that’s a different struggle.
