Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth

My dentist has been at me to get a mouth guard for my night time teeth grinding. I had one before and I stopped using it because I hated it.

However, bits of my teeth kept chipping off in a most distressing manner and I resigned myself to the inevitable. I now have the most sophisticated mouth guard known to man. It is 3D printed. It is form fitting. It’s still very uncomfortable, thanks for asking.

I didn’t ask the dentist how much it would cost (€22 in any sports shop) expecting the expense to be relatively modest. When I got a bill for €495, I nearly keeled over. Apparently, it’s an orthodontic treatment technically. And I guess they charge what they like for orthodontic treatment? I suppose it’s another incentive to wear the wretched thing.

Yikes. I clench rather than grind which is less destructive but still an issue. Usually when I am under stress, which is hard to avoid in these times I guess

Goodness – that is a commitment to using it! (I’m still dreading the next time I need a crown…€1,000, but at least it saves a tooth)

According to the dentist it will save all my teeth. I have doubts.

I wear a mouth guard at night, for grinding issues. I don’t love it, but I’ve been wearing it long enough that I have trouble sleeping without it (I feel like something is missing). As you might imagine, this leads to sort of the opposite problem that you have; if I forget to pack it or break it or lose it, I am in for a lot of tossing and turning. How fragile we humans are!

I don’t remember how much it cost but I remember that it was expensive for what is essentially a piece of molded plastic. And now I am bonded to that molded plastic. 🙂

I am quite heartened by how used to it you are. Have given up for a few days but will get back in the saddle…

I clench my teeth, and my mouthguard broke last summer during vacation. I thought no big deal: but within 10 days I had headaches, my jaw was stiff, and my neck was in agony. It took forever to get the new mouthgaurd, and to get used to it. But voila the headaches and neck pain are gone…it cost 1000+€ here in Germany (granted, insurance covered it). It took a while to get used to the new one which seemed so much bigger than the last one. I definitely could only wear it for an hour or two at first. So stick with it, you never know how your overall well-being may improve once you get used to it!
