Fame!

9 March, 2006
Posted in: Belgium, Reading etc.

For most of the next week I will be here. You are free to guess whether this is because:
a) The Bulletin magazine did an extensive trawl through potential expat bloggers based in Brussels and selected me to do a weekÂ’s guest blogging on the basis of my entertaining writing and penetrating insights; or
b) I know the lifestyle editor of the Bulletin.

If I am feeling energetic, I will also post my entries here. I may even meta-blog and talk about the challenge of thinking up material for the Bulletin. YouÂ’’d enjoy that.

After reading your blog for the last year and thinking “I wonder who’ll play the Princess in the movie version?” – your big break is imminent! Congrats and keep it up – I am hooked on the adventures of the Waffles!

I suppose you won’t be associating with the likes of us anymore, not now that you’re famous and all.

Thank you Chintzy. Um, yeah, pog, you lived here, the Bulletin? Hello Expat lurker, thank you, are you Irish, just curious. That’s right FT, when is your blog going live?
poggle

I didn’t live there, waffley – just visited a few times when the FFF was working over there …
belgianwaffle

Well, pog, I think all the same, you probably know what the Bulletin is like…

poggle

I probably do, waffley – I’ve lived outside the UK quite a lot and I don’t think those expat papers vary much ..

The lightbulb blew in the kitchen the other day. I spent most of the day wondering whether I would get a chance to stand on a chair and change it before darkness fell. I’Â’m a busy woman, I can tell you. Not too busy to blog, obviously.

I have just failed miserably in the change a lightbulb stakes. After having successfully removed the poncy little downlighter bulb (by dint of much swearing, a cut finger and injudicious use of a screwdriver to prise the damn thing out), I then spent a good five minutes trying to work out where the little prongs plug in in the fitting. Does it work now? Does it buggery.< kristin (Homepage)

the lightbulb in my closet has been out for a month. i’ve been choosing my outfits by feel.

When lightbulbs go chez lilo, it is usually my job to change them. Sometimes, for amusement, I wonder how long it will take for my H to stand on a chair and change them.
belgianwaffle
on 08 March 2006 at 22:54
Lilo, waiting in the dark, I assume. Kristin, excellent. Pog, I am most disappointed, I think of you as alarmingly handy (and now grey haired as well).SSC, worry not, I am just the bees knees.
poggle
on 09 March 2006 at 10:30
I am usually alarmingly handy, I must confess (she says completely immodestly) – but the little downlighter has defeated me. I plan to call in the electrician, who will wiggle his eyebrows and do that snort-down-the-nose-at-the-little-woman thing. Pah. And as I and lovely-temp-girl nipped out for ‘just the one’ after work, we both failed miserably in the covering up the grey hairs stakes last night. (If bonkers boss mentions it again today, he is toast ….)
Friar Tuck

How many waffles does it take to change a light bulb?

*glowers at FT*
Lilo
on 10 March 2006 at 20:36
Spot on. Actually, both the kitchen and sitting room are lit by 4 spotlights. It usually takes 2 of the lightbulbs to go before any action is taken (unless I do it, of course).
belgianwaffle
on 12 March 2006 at 21:08
FT, har. Pog, thank you for glowering, am relieved to hear of confirmation of handiness. Lilo, we’re down to one of 3 spotlights in the hall. Shortly, we’ll be going to bed in pitch darkness.

Meta-Blogging

3 February, 2006
Posted in: Reading etc.

Things here in blogland have been a bit strange recently. 20six is “migrating to a new platform”. In the interim, we have been spammed and our home page has become a little, um, odd. I have been invited to join a weblog team called “banmysite”. IÂ’’m guessing that it is not legit. And the whole “migrating to a new platform” thing has spooked lots of people. The words “blog builder” have been mentioned and the non-technical among us are, frankly, nervous. And people are abandoning their 20six blogs like rats departing a sinking ship. And the fabulous Jojo who is paid to keep us happy has left and we could never love another nanny as much.

I chose 20six to host my blog because when I started blogging I went to this site. As you will see, it gives an alphabetical list of possible hosts and the combination of my terminal laziness and the fact that 20six was first on the list made it an obvious choice. If I had known a little more, I might have gone for livejournal or blogspot or blogger but IÂ’m really glad I didn’Â’t because I have become very fond of the online community that is 20six. I suppose it would be pushing it to say that it breaks my heart to see people like pog (or poggle as she must now be known) thinking about leaving and bobble, norah and jd actually doing so, but it does make me a bit sad.

When I think of all the people I know from here being dispersed across the vastness of the internet, IÂ’m sad, bloglines or no bloglines. OK, I realise that these are people I know that I would walk past on the
street, but theyÂ’re still people I know (yes, inter alia, hjb, minks, locotes, this means you too; stop pretending you donÂ’t know me). In fact, they saved my sanity. It’Â’s hard and a bit lonely being a mother of small children abroad, I can tell you. In fact, I think I have been telling you for some time.

Anyway, the “migration” is scheduled for mid-February. Until then, I intend to stay put in my bunker and see out the last days of the old regime. I trust that when the migration is complete, I will emerge
and see that at least some of my old friends are still about. And, if my blog disappears in mid-February
(my faith in the technical people is, as you see, boundless), it will resurface elsewhere. After all, it is saving my sanity.

I was the tall studly-looking fella in case you were wondering…ps – didn’t know you had done a runner jack. Well, best of luck with whatever you’re up to. I second that motion. Even though I don’t do my blogging on here anymore [I’m here now], I still keep tabs on everyone I ‘met’ here, and I think I’d miss 20six if it did go.

Oh Pog, the romance, the drama, “the boy stood on the burning deck when all but he had fled” etc.
Thanks FP, DruidX, worry not, I will force you all to read my new blog, if need arises.
FT, that is no excuse.
JD, Locotes, having you talk to me in comments without seeing your blogs, makes me feel a bit like I’m getting communications from the spirit world, I quite like that.

Cavan Crash – Interview Sgt Jim Greene

He is warning motorists to exercise extreme caution if driving in Co Cavan near Ballinea where more than 5,000 chickens escaped from a lorry following an accident. The chickens have begun to lay eggs.

QWERTY

16 December, 2005
Posted in: Reading etc.

“Unbelievable as it may now sound, that keyboard layout [QWERTY] was designed in 1873 as a
feat of anti-engineering.  It employs a whole series of perverse tricks designed to force typists to type as slowly as possible, such as scattering the commonest letters over all keyboard rows and concentrating them on the left side (where right-handed people have to use
their weaker hand).  The reason behind all of those seemingly counterproductive features is that the typewriters of 1873 jammed if adjacent keys were struck in quick succession, so that manufacturers had to slow down typists.  When improvement in typewriters eliminated the problem of jamming, trials in 1932 with an efficiently laid-out keyboard showed that it would let us double our typing speed and reduce our typing effort by 95 percent. But QWERTY keyboards were solidly entrenched by then. The vested interests of hundreds of millions of QWERTY typists, typing teachers, typewriter and computer salespeople, and manufacturers have crushed all moves toward keyboard efficiency for over 60 years.”

At one time, you could buy Dvorak computer keyboards, which arranged the keys in the (supposedly) most efficient layout. I have not seen them advertised in ages, however.

beachhutman

on 16 December 2005 at 19:49

Of such absurdities are our worlds constructed. Of course the French decided to use the AZERTY layout, which is actually no better at all for typing French, but makes the point that at least it is NOT ENGLISH, which is the main thing for the Anglophobe French. “Ordinateur Individuelle” forsooth!

Ha! I remember hearing something like that once. In my world, I have typed so much that I’ve rubbed all the letters off the keyboard of my iBook G4 since I got it in February 2004, so I no longer can tell where the letters actually are… I have to rely on the memory in my fingertips. One day I’ll get around to fixing it but for now it looks kind of cool to have a computer with a mostly blank keyboard!

Blog anniversary

11 December, 2005
Posted in: Reading etc.

Two years yesterday.  Who would have thought that I would have the stamina?  To celebrate I had intended to change my decor, update my favourites and do a post explaining why my favourites are all fabulous with lots of links.  But it’s hard to do that with a baby in one or both hands.  Maybe not so much stamina after all.

Happy Anniversary! I’m hoping you have many many more (babies and) anniversaries!
A few weeks back, I caught a televised travel special (Globe Trekkers?) on Belgium. They showed a bunch of very old women making lace by throwing around little thimble things. It was absolutely amazing. Is that what Belgium is like?! If so, I’m moving immediately. And I’m hoping you’ll meet me some time for tea.
